IELTS vs PTE Academic: How to Choose the Right English Test
If you are planning to study abroad, IELTS Academic and PTE Academic may both appear on your university shortlist. The useful question is which accepted test suits your application and the way you perform under timed conditions.
Start by checking acceptance. Then compare the tasks through official sample materials before committing to a preparation plan.
Check your course requirements first
Look at the English language requirements for your exact course and intake. Check the accepted test, overall score and minimum scores for each skill. University admission and visa requirements can differ, so confirm both where applicable.
Avoid assuming that acceptance at one university means acceptance everywhere in that country. If you are considering several courses, make a simple comparison sheet and save the official requirement links.
Understand the speaking experience
IELTS Speaking involves a live interaction with an examiner. In PTE Academic, you give spoken responses through a microphone at a computer. Both require clear spoken English, but the experience of responding is different. [4, 5]
Some students feel more comfortable speaking to a person. Others prefer recording their answers at a computer. Try sample tasks in both formats and pay attention to how well you organise your ideas, follow instructions and manage pauses.
Comfort is useful, but it should be tested through practice rather than assumed from a description of the exam.
Compare the tasks you will prepare for
Both tests assess Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking. PTE Academic includes tasks that draw on more than one skill, such as listening to information and responding to it. IELTS Academic includes tasks such as describing visual information and writing an essay. [2, 5]
For either test, understanding the task is part of preparation. You need to practise producing relevant answers within the rules and time limits, as well as improving vocabulary, grammar and comprehension.
Use current official preparation materials. Test content and scoring guidance can change, so an old video or a memorised response template should not be the foundation of your study plan.
Read score requirements in the correct scale
IELTS uses a band scale from 0 to 9, while PTE Academic scores range from 10 to 90. These numbers are not directly interchangeable. Use the scores published by the receiving institution rather than calculating your own conversion. [4, 6]
Check individual skill requirements too. Meeting an overall target does not necessarily meet the conditions of an offer if one component score is below the required minimum.
Is PTE easier than IELTS
There is no single answer that applies to every student. Your English level, familiarity with the tasks and ability to work under timed conditions all affect performance.
A practical way to decide is to try official sample tasks, note the mistakes you make and identify the work needed to reach the accepted target. Choose based on this evidence, alongside application requirements, rather than a friend’s result or a claim that one test guarantees a higher score.
Plan around your application deadline
Check current test dates, booking conditions, result timelines and how the institution receives results. Leave time for preparation and for dealing with an unexpected delay or another attempt if needed. Avoid booking so close to an application deadline that your plan depends on everything going perfectly.
Common questions
Should I prepare for both tests at once
Compare them briefly first. Once acceptance and suitability are clear, focusing on one format can help you use your preparation time more consistently.
Will switching tests guarantee a better result
No. A different format may suit you better, but switching does not remove gaps in your English skills. Assess those gaps before paying for another test.
