IELTS Academic vs General Training: Which Test Do You Need?

Choosing the right IELTS test is one of the first decisions to make before you begin preparing. IELTS Academic and IELTS General Training assess English skills, but they serve different purposes. Booking the wrong version can leave you with a result that does not meet your application requirements.

The starting point is the organisation asking for your English test result. Check its published requirements before choosing a course or paying for a test.

Who is IELTS Academic for

IELTS Academic is generally used for undergraduate or postgraduate study and for some professional registration purposes. Its Reading and Writing tasks reflect aspects of academic language. However, you should still check the exact test accepted by your university, course or professional body. [1, 2]

For example, a student applying for a taught postgraduate programme should look at that programme’s English language entry requirements, rather than relying on a general statement about studying in a particular country.

Who is IELTS General Training for

IELTS General Training is commonly used for migration and for study or training below degree level. Its Reading and Writing tasks focus more on everyday and workplace situations. The authority or organisation receiving your result determines whether this version is suitable. [1, 3]

Do not assume that every work-related application needs General Training. A regulated profession may have a different requirement from the immigration route you are considering.

What changes between the two tests

Both versions cover Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking. Listening and Speaking are the same, while Reading and Writing differ. In Academic Writing Task 1, candidates describe visual information such as a chart, table or diagram. General Training Writing Task 1 asks candidates to write a letter. Both versions include an essay in Task 2. [2, 3]

These differences matter when preparing. Practising letters alone will not prepare you for summarising a graph, and familiarity with academic passages does not replace practice with the General Training Reading format.

How to confirm the right version

Before booking, record four details from the receiving organisation: the accepted test name, the required overall score, any minimum scores for individual skills, and the deadline for supplying the result.

Also check whether a specific approved test arrangement is required. IELTS for UKVI requirements, for example, depend on the relevant application route; a university requirement alone may not answer every visa-related question. Use the relevant official guidance and ask for written clarification if the wording is unclear. [1]

If you are applying to several institutions, compare all their requirements before choosing. The same test booking should fit your intended applications wherever possible.

Should you choose the easier version

Choose the version your application accepts. A test that feels more familiar is of little use if the receiving organisation will not accept it. Once the correct version is clear, assess your current skills and build a preparation plan around the tasks you will actually face.

Useful preparation includes timed practice, reviewing errors and getting feedback on writing and speaking. The time needed will depend on your starting level, target scores and study schedule.

Common questions

Can IELTS Academic always replace General Training

No. Do not treat the versions as interchangeable. Follow the requirements of the organisation or authority receiving your result.

Can I begin preparation before choosing a version

You can work on general English, Listening and Speaking, but confirm the version early so your Reading and Writing practice is relevant.
